Great Lakes Limestone Trade Up 27% In May

The Lake Carriers' Association reports that limestone shipments on the Great Lakes totaled 3.6 million net tons in May, an increase of 47.6% compared with April, and an increase of 27.3% compared to a year ago. Trade was down, however, more than 16% compared to the month's five-year average.

Loadings at U.S. ports were up 23% compared with a year ago. Shipments from Canadian docks increased even more, 43.2%.

Year-to-date, the Lakes limestone trade stands at 6.1 million net tons, an increase of 38.3% compared with a year ago, but a decrease of 21.1% compared with the five-year average for the January-May time frame. Loadings at U.S. ports are up 37.8% compared with a year ago. Shipments from Canadian docks are 40.3% ahead of last year's pace.
