Cemex was awarded a supply contract for approximately 500,000 tons of cement for construction of a third set of locks in the Panama Canal expansion project. Part of a government initiative to catalyze Panamanian development, the Canal expansion includes construction of two locks, excavation of access channels to the new locks, and widening and deepening of navigational channels.
Over the past two years, Cemex has invested approximately $300 million in Panamanian cement operations, enabling its plant to triple production capacity. That upgrade positions the producer to satisfy Canal-related cement specifications and demand.
Cemex Central America President Jesus Gonzalez says, ìAs part of the contract, Cemex will provide specially designed products for the engineering requirements of the work and ensure supply, a result of investing in expanding our production capacity since 2008.î?
