Lakes Limestone Trade Up 29% In June


Shipments of limestone on the Great Lakes totaled 3.9 million net tons in June, an increase of 6.2% compared with May, and an increase of 29% compared with a year ago

Shipments of limestone on the Great Lakes totaled 3.9 million net tons in June, an increase of 6.2% compared with May, and an increase of 29% compared with a year ago. The trade, however, was down 8% when compared to the monthís five-year average.

Loadings at U.S. ports were up 44.2% compared to a year ago, but shipments from Canadian docks dipped slightly, about 60,000 tons.
Year-to-date, the Lakes limestone trade stands at 10 million net tons, an increase of 34.6% compared with a year ago, but a decrease of 16.6% compared to the five-year average for the first half of the year.

Loadings at U.S. ports are up 40.2% compared with a year ago. Shipments from Canadian docks are 17.6% ahead of last yearís pace.
This data is compiled by the Lake Carriersí Association, which represents 18 American companies that operate 55 U.S.-flag vessels on the Great Lakes.
