Aggregates Production Up in Second Quarter


An estimated 680 Mt of total construction aggregates was produced and shipped for consumption in the United States in the second quarter of 2019, an increase of 3% compared with that of the second quarter of 2018, according to Jason Willett, crushed stone commodity specialist for the U.S. Geological Survey.

The five leading states, in descending order of production for consumption, were Texas, California, Pennsylvania, Florida and Ohio. Their combined total production for consumption in the second quarter of 2019 was 198 Mt and represented 29% of the U.S. total. 

Production for consumption in the first six months of 2019 increased by 5% compared with that of the same period of 2018

An estimated 406 million metric tons (Mt) of crushed stone was produced and shipped for consumption in the United States in the second quarter of 2019, an increase of 4% compared with that of the second quarter of 2018. 

The five leading states, in descending order of production for consumption, were Texas, Pennsylvania, Florida, Missouri and North Carolina. Their combined total production for consumption in the second quarter of 2019 was 135 Mt and represented 33% of the U.S. total. 

Production for consumption in the first six months of 2019 increased by 8% compared with that of the same period of 2018.

The estimated U.S. output of construction sand and gravel produced and shipped for consumption in the second quarter of 2019 was 273 Mt, a slight increase compared with that of the second quarter of 2018. 

The five leading states, in descending order of production for consumption, were Texas, California, Arizona, Minnesota and Michigan. Their combined total production for consumption in the second quarter of 2019 was 101 Mt and represented 37% of the U.S. total. 

Production for consumption in the first six months of 2019 increased slightly compared with that of the same period of 2018.

Portland (including blended) cement consumption increased slightly in the second quarter of 2019 compared with that of the second quarter of 2018. Consumption in the first 6 months of 2019 also increased slightly compared with that of the same period of 2018.
