NSSGA Elects New Chairman

Ronald E. “Ron” Summers, senior vice president, Materials Group, for Glendora, Calif.-based CalPortland Co., was elected the 2012 Chairman of the Board of the National Stone, Sand and Gravel Association (NSSGA). His election came during the NSSGA Board of Directors’ meeting at the association’s annual convention in Charlotte, N.C., on March 13. Summers began his term immediately.

“Ron Summers is a champion of our association and is widely recognized as an industry veteran with an overarching understanding of the aggregates business that he applies to the needs faced by the industry as a whole,” said NSSGA President and CEO Joy Pinniger. “His leadership will continue to enhance NSSGA’s strength as a unifying voice of the aggregates industry from coast to coast necessary for today’s challenges.”

As he addressed the NSSGA Board of Directors, Summers thanked the association leaders, members and headquarters staff and noted the number one challenge he plans to tackle during his tenure as chairman is the need for continued education of elected officials and voters. He said, “This goal works hand-in-hand with the need for a long-term, fully funded transportation bill. While people use our country's transportation systems every day, they don't think about the fact that so many of the roads they travel need to be repaired, if not expanded or fully replaced.”

“We so desperately need a strong transportation system, put in place with a long-term funding method,” he continued. “Our legislators and voters don’t really understand what is at stake. We can never lose sight of the fact that one of our responsibilities is to educate the public about the need for better roads.”

In addition to his position with CalPortland Co., Summers was previously on the board of directors of the Washington Aggregates and Concrete Association and is currently on the executive committee of the California Construction and Industrial Minerals Association. He and his wife Meredith live in southern California and have two daughters, both married.
