Cement Shipments Up, Clinker Down


According to Hendrik G. van Oss, cement commodity specialist for the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), total shipments of portland and blended cement in the United States and Puerto Rico for January 2011 were 3.7 million metric tons (Mt). This was 6 percent higher than shipments in January 2010.

The leading producing states, Texas, California, Missouri, Florida and Alabama, in descending order, shipped 53 percent of the January total. The leading consuming states, Texas, California, Florida, Louisiana and Arizona, in descending order, received about 48 percent of the January total shipments.

Clinker production totaled 3.4 Mt in January, about 10 percent below the output in January 2010. The leading producing states, Texas, California, Alabama, South Carolina and Missouri, in descending order, produced about 54 percent of the January total.

Masonry cement shipments in January of about 110,000 Mt were about 8 percent lower than shipments for January 2010. The leading consuming states in January, in descending order, were Florida, Texas, California, North Carolina and Georgia, and these states received about 54 percent of January's total shipments.
