Vulcan Materials Co.'s Stafford Quarry in Stafford, Va., received an Excellence in Community Relations Gold Award from the National Stone, Sand and Gravel Association. This national award recognizes a superior level of active involvement with and positive contributions to the facility's neighboring community.
The facility is part of Vulcan’s Mideast Division, which has its headquarters in Winston Salem, N.C.
Stafford Quarry began operations in 1978. It is recognized as a vital part of the community as evidenced by the honors it has received from both local community and national organizations. As a long-standing community partner, the Quarry's sustained commitment to the community includes participating in Vulcan’s highly successful Adopt-a-School program, partnering with Friends of the Rappahannock, being the largest donor to date to the Stafford County Civil War Park and offering tours of the facility to school groups. Stafford Quarry's Plant Manager, Martin Bischoff, leads all the facility tours for local schools, cub scouts and geology students. In addition, he and his staff have delivered numerous "spirit rocks" to local school partners.

"Vulcan Materials Co. has been an outstanding business partner for Rockhill Elementary School," said Pat Johnson, principal at Rockhill Elementary School, Stafford Quarry's adopt-a-school partner. "Vulcan supports our school in so many ways. They were instrumental in the construction of a student walking/running track as well as contributed labor and supplies to beautify the Children’s Garden at the entrance of the school. Vulcan’s Market Manager Todd Helton, is an active tutor at the school as well as a mentor to students. Vulcan Materials Co. is highly deserving of this award."
