Nugent Sand Co. was granted approval by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Louisville District, to expand its operation in Utica, Ky. Approval was granted for expansion on a permit issued in 2000, which will allow for additional barge fleeting, cleaning and minor repairs to be conducted at the company’s site in an embayment along the Ohio River between Marine Builders and Eagle Steel.
Nugent Sand opened its dock and sales yard in Utica in 2001 and is one of the largest producers of construction aggregates in the Ohio River Valley, according to the company.
The company distributes sand and gravel by truck and barge and has locations in Columbus and near Bethlehem, as well as a number of sites in Kentucky. The company’s Utica location serves as a sales yard and a truck distribution location. The new operation focused on barge cleaning and repair will not be handled by Nugent Sand, but instead has been contracted through a sublease to Mt. Vernon Barge Service.
