First Quarter Aggregates Production Unchanged

An estimated 332 million metric tons (Mt) of total construction aggregates was produced and shipped for consumption in the United States in the first quarter of 2011, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. Jason Willets, crushed stone commodity specialist, noted that the amount was essentially unchanged when compared with the same period of 2010.

Ohio Mine Safety Training Center Hosts Annual Regional Safety Competition

Ohio hosted the 30th Annual Ohio Valley Mine Rescue Post 6 regional mine safety competition at the Jerry L. Stewart Ohio Mine Safety Training Center in Harrison County, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR), Division of Mineral Resources Management.

Housing Starts Gain 3.5 Percent

Nationwide housing starts rose 3.5 percent to a seasonally adjusted annual pace of 560,000 units in May, according to newly released figures from the U.S. Commerce Department. The gain partially offsets a larger decline that was registered in April.

Vulcan Materials Takes Aim at Hunger

Vulcan Materials Co. sponsored the first annual Mideast Division Sporting Clays Tournament to support the Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest NC. More than 70 employees, customers and vendors participated in the inaugural event which was held at the Friendship Sporting Clays facility in East Bend, N.C.
