According to the Daily News, Martin Marietta Materials is seeking zoning permission to build a 1,800-acre limestone mine on N.C. 50 near Haws Run Road in Jacksonville, N.C. The Onslow County Board of Adjustment has determined a quarry would be harmonious with the surrounding area with a provision that the quarry faces remain more than 2,000 ft. from nearby hog farm lagoons.
During a five-meeting, quasi-judicial hearing, geologists testified in favor of Martin Marietta saying a limestone mine would not be detrimental to the surrounding area. Called by lawyers representing residents opposed to the quarry, other geologists said a mine would mean sinkholes and other problems.
Martin Marietta now has to apply for a mining permit from the state. Residents opposed to the ruling have 30 days to file an appeal.
