AGG1 a Good One

Of course everyone knows the phrase “Remember the Alamo!” but having just returned from San Antonio, I am inclined to say “Remember AGG1!” because it was, in fact, memorable on multiple fronts.

AGG1 2013, co-located with World of Asphalt, concluded a successful run March 21: a sold-out show floor with record exhibit space, near-record registered attendance, more co-located industry groups and meetings than ever before, and record education ticket sales.

Near-record registered attendance topped 6,000 at close of the shows. Registrants came from all 50 states, eight Canadian provinces and 50 other countries worldwide. More than one-third were company presidents/owners, vice presidents, general managers or chief financial officers, and all together more than 84 percent of registrants were in managerial roles.

The sold-out show floor covered a record 123,600 net sq. ft. of exhibit space taken by more than 385 exhibitors. Leading manufacturers and suppliers showcased their latest products and technologies for the aggregates, asphalt, pavement maintenance and traffic safety industry sectors.

The thing I like most about AGG1 is that it is the perfect size for a successful show. At bauma, ConExpo-Con/Agg or MineExpo, the show is certainly larger and there a million more people, but everything is also very spread out and navigation time takes away from what you can accomplish.

At AGG1, it feels more user-friendly, and friendly is a good word to use. I couldn’t walk down an aisle almost anywhere without seeing and saying hello to manufacturers, distributors and producers that I have known for years.

If I have one complaint, it is that the many exhibitors that set up shop each show do not make maximum use of the event by having press conferences or receptions. There was probably more than 50 members of the working press there, including some of our colleagues from Europe. It would be great if there were more formal product launches and booth tours planned to take advantage of that.

AGG1 is owned by the National Stone, Sand and Gravel Association and produced by the Association of Equipment Manufacturers. Kudos to them on a great event. Look for a full report in the May issue of Rock Products.
