First Quarter 2011 Aggregates Production Flat

An estimated 332 million metric tons (Mt) of total construction aggregates was produced and shipped for consumption in the United States in the first quarter of 2011, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. Jason Willets, crushed stone commodity specialist, noted that the amount was essentially unchanged when compared with the same period of 2010.

GPS Grid Threatened

The Association of Equipment Manufacturers (AEM) is calling on Congress, Transportation Secretary LaHood and the Federal Communications Commission to stop the threat in the U.S. to Global Positioning Systems (GPS) posed by LightSquared, the company planning to deploy a nationwide broadband internet infrastructure of 40,000 ground stations.

Section 2 of the Federal Mine Safety and Health Act of 1977 (Act) contains seven paragraphs in the form of a declaration by Congress outlining the purpose of the Act. The first four paragraphs describe the national concern over working conditions and practices in the mining industry as they affect safety.
