Liberty Quarry Still Under Fire

Technical experts employed by the city of Temecula, Calif., scientists with San Diego State University and Pechanga tribal officials criticized Riverside County's environmental review of Granite Construction's Liberty Quarry project during a recent hearing conducted by the county Planning Commission.

Pa. Quarry Proposal Faces Strong Opposition

According to online sources, an expert witness asserted that a proposed Geryville Materials quarry in Lower Milford, Pa., does not conform to ordinances regarding tree replanting, woodlands and wetlands, and warned that not enough is known about a landfill on the property.

West Coast Aggregates Proposes 100-Year Plan

Pilarcitos Quarry, Half Moon Bay, Calif., is seeking approval for a 100-year plan to extract as many as a million tons of aggregate from canyon walls surrounding its current quarry operation, pending approval by the San Mateo County Planning Commission. The expansion would incorporate another 117 acres of steep forested land surrounding the floor of the quarry, which has been in operation since 1933.

Cemex Seeks New Ohio Quarry

Cemex is seeking to rezone land that it owns just south and west of Yellow Springs, Ohio, to construct a new quarry. If successful, the zoning would be changed from agricultural usage to mining. The 289-acre site would begin operations in 2019 in the southwest part of the property, and then proceed east, then north.

First Quarter 2011 Aggregates Production Flat

An estimated 332 million metric tons (Mt) of total construction aggregates was produced and shipped for consumption in the United States in the first quarter of 2011, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. Jason Willets, crushed stone commodity specialist, noted that the amount was essentially unchanged when compared with the same period of 2010.
