Blast With the Best at Beckmann Quarry

Marietta Materials’ Beckmann QuarryStrategic Alliance partners Sandvik and Dyno Nobel held their annual Quarry Academy Nov. 12-15, 2013, at the Omni La Mansion del Rio Hotel in San Antonio. The event included a site visit to Martin Marietta Materials’ Beckmann Quarry.

During the tour the participants received a plant overview; viewed primary loading and the company’s gigantic O&K in-pit mobile HSI crusher; saw an electronic initiation systems demonstration; viewed a production blast (see blast sequence photos); and inspected field-survey control instruments, tools and methods.

Explosives Safety and Security Critical for Aggregates Producers

The Department of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) plays a vital role in regulating and educating the explosives industry and in protecting the public from inadequate storage and security. Federal explosives law and regulations provide requirements and standards for the secure storage of explosives materials. To maximize the effects of regulatory compliance, the following voluntary suggestions, developed in partnership with the International Makers of Explosives and the International Society of Explosives Engineers, may serve as a helpful guide.

Reporting Explosives Theft or Loss

Report thefts or loss of explosive materials to the United States Bomb Data Center (USBDC) 800-461-8841 or 888-283-2662 (ATF-BOMB). The USBDC staff is available to provide guidance to industry members on how to complete properly reports of a theft or loss. In the event that missing explosives are found, or stolen explosives are recovered and returned, please notify the USBDC and any local authorities to whom the initial report of loss was made. The USBDC is responsible for tracking all stolen, lost and recovered explosives.
