Martin Marietta Materials Inc. announced to residents of Raleigh, N.C., that the company intends to file a proposal with the city to rezone property it already owns south of Westgate Road.

Company representatives said the proposal would shift Westgate Road north and expand its operations into undeveloped property. Some residents have expressed concern about what the expansion will do to property values, wildlife, the environment and the air. Martin Marietta is holding off commenting on the potential expansion.

Meanwhile, some residents said they may take action on their own. They are reportedly talking about hiring an attorney to see what they can do as a group.
The company reportedly plans to file its request for a zoning hearing with the city and seek a date in April of 2012 to move the process forward.
