Hanson Quarry Expansion Proposal Faces Opposition
Residents of Raleigh, N.C., turned out in Raleigh City Council chambers to protest plans for expansion of Hanson Aggregates’ Crabtree Quarry. Hanson would like about 170 acres of land currently zoned as residential to be rezoned industrial so it can continue aggregates operations at the plant.
According to news reports, the expansion would move the quarry closer to established subdivisions and some people who live near the site say it would destroy the environment as well as property values.
The quarry's owners dispute the contentions saying if the facility expands, it could offer benefits to the community in return. This would include creating access to a nearby park, and allowing the quarry to act as flood-containment in the event of major storm.
The Raleigh Planning Commission said it would assess the issue, look at the data and make a recommendation to city council.
