Jefferson County, Wash., intends to issue a permit that will allow Iron Mountain Quarry to blast within a mile of the resort community of Port Ludlow, Wash., according to a report in the Port Townsend Leader. The approval reportedly comes with 35 mitigation measures but without the company submitting a full environmental impact statement (EIS) as the county suggested.

Lehigh May Build 4.5-Mile Conveyor PDF Print E-mail

Lehigh Cement Co. is pursing plans to erect a 4.5-mile conveyor system between its quarry in New Windsor, Md., and its Union Bridge, Md., cement plant, according to a report in the Baltimore Sun. The conveyor would run under roads, rails, streams and over acres of protected farmland. Lehigh says such a system is the best way to keep the plant running. But some local residents have criticized Lehigh's environmental record and are concerned about the prospect of construction on agriculturally preserved land.

A plan to expand Northern Aggregates’ Harris Quarry south of Willits, Calif., cleared a hurdle when the Mendocino County, Calif., board of supervisors unanimously certified the environmental impact report (EIR) for the project and approved zoning changes to allow an asphalt plant at the site. According to the Ukiah Daily Journal, the project would allow Northern Aggregates to rezone about 18 acres of the land to accommodate the proposed asphalt plant.

Martin Marietta Withdraws Application PDF Print E-mail

Martin Marietta Materials Inc. withdrew its permit application for a quarry in Onslow County, N.C., according to a report in The Daily News, Jacksonville, N.C. The move came after the company presented an amended plan following its initial bid for a special-use permit. The plan for a 1,831-acre limestone operation – which was to have three phases with the first phase taking 40 years to mine – generated community opposition.
