USGS: Third Quarter Ups and Downs


usgsDecember 18, 2012 – USGS is just about to report third-quarter production numbers, and the inside scoop is that an estimated 580 metric tons (Mt) of total construction aggregates was produced and shipped for consumption in the United States in the third quarter of 2012, a decrease of 5 percent compared with that of the same period of 2011. That's the bad news. The good news is that the estimated production for consumption in the first 9 months of 2012 was 1.48 billion metric tons (Gt), a slight increase compared with that of the same period of 2011.  An estimated 334 million Mt of crushed stone was produced and shipped for consumption in the United States in the third quarter of 2012, a decrease of 5 percent compared with that of the same period of 2011. The estimated production for consumption in the first 9 months of 2012 was 867 Mt, a slight increase compared with the first 9 months of 2011. The estimated U.S. output of construction sand and gravel produced and shipped for consumption in the third quarter of 2012 was 246 Mt, a decrease of 6 percent compared with that of the same period of 2011. The estimated production for consumption in the first 9 months of 2012 was 613 Mt, a slight increase compared with that of the same period of 2011.
