Hillhead: Day One
- Written by Mark Kuhar
June 19, 2012 – Greetings from Hillhead 2012, near Buxton England. I am the only U.S. aggregates industry editor attending the show, the largest working quarry event in the world. This morning's press conference held by the Mineral Products Association was prefaced by a quick discussion of market conditions. Some of the main considerations, such as overcoming recession, doing more with less, over-regulation, political gridlock, sustainable development, raising awareness of health and safety issues and the urgent need for greater infrastructure investment sounded very familiar. It reinforced the fact that in the United States, we aren't alone in facing these challenges. And we are all seeking acceptable solutions. It was also good to speak with my European counterparts, Patrick Smith, editor of Aggregates Business Europe, and Steve Adam, editor of Quarry Management. This year's show features sunny weather, a record number of exhibitors and a very international attendee roster.
