Foxx Named Transportation Secretary

Foxx, the mayor of Charlotte, N.C., to be the next transportation secretary, saying his local government experience would help him manage the nation’s roads, bridges and airports. Flanked by Foxx and Ray LaHood, the departing secretary, Obama said Foxx was “one of the best mayors that Charlotte has ever seen.”

Fatalities Lowest Ever

MSHAredApril 9, 2013 – MSHA announced the release of preliminary data for 2012 that indicate the lowest fatality and injury rates in the history of U.S. mining. In 2012, the fatality rate was .0107 deaths per 200,000 hours worked. The rate of reported injuries was 2.56 per 200,000 hour worked. These reductions replace the prior year’s record historical low rates.

Mine Safety Bill Introduced

MSHAredApril 2, 2013 – Reps. Nick J. Rahall (D-W.Va.) and George Miller (D-Calif.) introduced the Robert C. Byrd Mine Safety Protection Act of 2013 (H.R. 1373), legislation aimed at strengthening national efforts to protect miners' health and safety.
