Las Vegas hosts the world’s largest exposition for mining, aggregates and mineral processing.
Mark S. Kuhar, Steve Fiscor and Gina Tverdak-Slattery
Every four years, the U.S. National Mining Association (NMA) holds MINExpo International, the world’s largest exposition for the mining and mineral processing sectors. The event will take place Sept. 24-26, 2012, at the Las Vegas Convention Center. As far as exhibit space, the show is currently sold out. More than 1,800 companies will display equipment and discuss services on more than 850,000 sq. ft. of exhibition space; in 2008, 1,224 exhibitors occupied 600,000 sq. ft.
To accommodate all of the new companies pursuing the mining business, the NMA contracted for more space in the South Hall. “This is the first time we have used the South Hall,” said Moya Phelleps, senior vice president for membership services, NMA. “Traditionally, MINExpo took place in the North and Central Halls, along with some outdoor space. Now we have South Halls Nos. 3 and 4.” Readers might recall the Silver Lot in the front of the convention center was off-limits because of construction in 2008. All of that space will be used this year.
For people who decide to begin their MINExpo 2012 experience at the South Hall, full service registration will be available, Phelleps explained. “We also will have a business center for the South Hall with meeting rooms that can be reserved in 30 minute increments,” Phelleps said. “We are excited that a large number of universities have decided to exhibit at MINExpo, and we have grouped them together in an area just outside the South Hall. The North Hall will remain the same, with full registration there. The International Business Center will be located on the second floor of the North Hall.”
The NMA will provide a shuttle service from the MINExpo hotels to the North and South Halls. An intra-exposition shuttle service will also operate at the convention center. Delegates staying at the Las Vegas Hotel Hilton, the closest hotel to the convention center, will depart from the east tower and arrive at the North Hall first and then the South Hall. Delegates at the North Hall will take the same shuttle from the North Hall to the South Hall.
The NMA will be using new digital tools to help delegates plan and navigate MINExpo 2012. MINExpo has a Facebook page and is tweeting on Twitter. An online show directory is currently being developed, Phelleps explained, which will go live at the end of July. The directory is searchable by name and equipment, and will remain active for a year after the show. “During 2008, we had a similar online directory, but it was fairly basic,” Phelleps said. “The 2012 online directory will be much more extensive.”
A MINExpo 2012 app will be available in mid-August. The app will include the online directory along with the schedule for the technical program. One of the unique features of the app will be its “way-finding capability” from one hall to another.
Delegates are encouraged to register in advance on the website (www.MINExpo.com). The pre-registration process has been designed to assist attendees in making the most of their MINExpo experience. For example, during the registration process, attendees will be asked to participate in the new MatchMaker program. Those that do will be prompted to select the equipment and services that interests them the most. About a week before MINExpo 2012 begins, they will receive an email listing all of those exhibitors.
The MINExpo 2012 technical program takes place during the mornings of Tuesday and Wednesday (September 25 and 26). Experts will deliver 20 presentations on various subjects related to mining and mineral processing. One session will focus on automation, and two sessions will discuss mine safety. The NMA will present the industry’s CORESafety initiative in the technical sessions and at the association’s booth. The technical program in 2008 was a huge success, and 2012 is shaping up to be even better.
In an effort to give Rock Products readers an inside advantage, we contacted a number of equipment manufacturers to find out what they are planning for MINExpo 2012. Some of the companies were not prepared to talk about plans in advance, while others are purposely withholding information to make special announcements at the exposition. But, many equipment manufacturers and service providers did share their plans and the following MINExpo Preview compiles the information gathered as of early July.

W.S. Tyler will showcase screening machines, screen decks and washer technology. The F-Class Vibrating Screen offers a solution for scalping and classifying of ores, minerals, stones, sand and gravel. Featuring four-bearing technology, the F-Class minimizes structural vibration and delivers a consistent stroke, which two-bearing screens cannot provide, and with right media choice virtually eliminates blinding and pegging. The Pro-Deck approach implements an analysis and modification strategy in processing operations to maximize screen productivity and minimize wear by selecting the appropriate type of screen media according to three phases of screening.
The new Hydro-Clean washing unit effectively cleans deleterious material from product streams, while reducing water consumption by up to 75 percent over. It is available in four model sizes that produce 20 to 400 tph, depending on the application. www.wstyler.com
