For an aggregates operation, material transport between the face and the primary often means relying on haul trucks, whether rigid frame, or for wet or muddy conditions, articulated haulers. But hauling is not confined to off-road conditions. Many quarry operations run their own fleet of over-the-road haul trucks as well.

Here are some of the truck offerings available for quarry operations that are in the market to move material from point A to point B as efficiently as possible.

BAE Systems
Road tests conducted by BAE Systems reveal that commercial trucks powered by the company’s green HybriDrive parallel hybrid electric propulsion system use 30 percent less fuel than trucks running on traditional diesel engines.

The parallel system – the latest member of BAE Systems’ HybriDrive family – complements and draws upon the company’s proven HybriDrive series system, currently deployed in more than 3,500 transit buses across the globe. The parallel system is designed for heavy-duty truck applications that include aggregates, construction, pick-up and delivery, and utility vehicles.

The average fuel economy improvement of 30 percent on trucks powered by the parallel system was experienced across a range of standard driving cycles. However, the system performed best on stop-and-go cycles where average speed is between 5 and 20 mph making it an optimal choice for refuse collection and delivery trucks. Based on duty cycles and fuel usage, a truck fleet owner who uses the HybriDrive parallel system can expect payback within three to five years.

The most-talked-about over-the-road truck in years is the Caterpillar CT660 vocational truck, introduced last year. The CT660 is the first model in a full line of Class 8 vocational trucks designed to work as transit mixers, refuse haulers, dump trucks and in any application requiring a heavy-duty truck with reliability, durability and low cost, the company said.

“This is an exciting historic milestone for Caterpillar,” said Steve Gosselin, vice president of the customer services support division. “The CT660 is a natural expansion of the Cat product line and a perfect complement to other Cat equipment on the jobsite. The CT660 is a direct result of Caterpillar's commitment to continuously develop new products that accelerate the business success of our customers – and its design results from hundreds of hours spent with vocational truck owners, fleet managers and drivers to determine their specific needs.”

Engine options for the CT660 include the Cat CT11, CT13 and CT15 – with displacements of 11.1, 12.5 and 15.2 liters – provide horsepower ratings from 330 to 550 and peak torque ratings from 1,450 to 1,850 lb.-ft. The engines are designed specifically for vocational applications, yielding optimum horsepower/torque combinations, while providing customers the flexibility to match power and performance to specific applications and operating conditions.

A notable transmission option for the CT660 is the Cat CX31 automatic, a reliable, proven performer since 2004 in global vocational applications. The CX31, with six forward speeds and one reverse, is built to complement the torque output of Cat CT Series engines. John Deere
John Deere offers four Series II Articulated Dump Trucks (ADTs), featuring exclusive onboard weighing systems, tire-pressure monitoring systems and a host of control and cab changes designed to enhance comfort and productivity.

All D-Series models are rugged six-wheel-drive units that provide powerful traction in demanding conditions. They are designed for maximum productivity, increased uptime and low daily operating costs, particularly in fuel efficiency, with Tier 3-certified engines ranging from 265 to 413 hp.

Onboard weighing systems are standard equipment on Deere D-Series II ADTs. They give operators overload protection, with mirror-mounted lights that alert the loading operator when the truck is nearing capacity. The payload weight information is also available through JDLink so owners and equipment managers can monitor truck utilization far away from the jobsite.

“The onboard weighing system helps the operator manage his productivity and uptime,” said John Chesterman, product marketing manager for ADTs, John Deere Construction & Forestry. “You can monitor material moved data right from your desktop via the information transmitted through JDLink. This helps in calculating machine utilization and managing a project.”

A fully automatic transmission with an integrated transmission retarder has improved transmission shift performance, allowing quicker acceleration out of the loading area for faster cycle times, along with decreased fuel consumption. John Deere,

The DA40 articulated hauler from Doosan has a completely new cab providing more space and improved visibility for the operator, “best in class” noise levels and a fully automatic climate-control system, according to the company.

For easier operation, Doosan has introduced new electronic systems and simplified fingertip controls with a digital display of all desired machine functions. The fully automatic eight-gear transmission and smooth Tiptronic gear-shifting (both automatic and manual gear functions are available) allow the operator to concentrate on working conditions.

For routine maintenance and service, the cab can be tilted backward to provide easy access to components. Easier service access and longer service intervals result in lower operating costs. A fully automatic central greasing system and rear view camera are standard.

“To reflect the complete integration of the Doosan Moxy ADT product line into the Doosan Heavy equipment offering, the new ADTs will no longer include Moxy branding,” said Aaron Kleingartner, Doosan marketing manager.

“Doosan ADTs have permanent six-wheel drive for equal power distribution while the free-swinging rear tandem bogie offer excellent driving performance in difficult terrain,” Kleingartner said. “A unique articulation system with a forward mounted turning ring allows equal weight distribution even during maximum turning to ensure maximum traction. An independent front suspension is a unique feature of the Doosan ADT, which provides maximum ground contact and shock absorption. Komatsu America Corp
Komatsu America Corp. offers the HM400-3 articulated truck. The HM400-3 is powered by a Komatsu SAA6D140E-6 engine with a net horsepower of 469 (350 kW) and is EPA Tier 4 Interim and EU Stage 3B emissions certified.

Komatsu leveraged its leadership in technology and innovation – building on its proven Tier 3 engine platform – to design a more environmentally friendly engine that increases power while decreasing fuel consumption.

The HM400-3 features a maximum gross vehicle weight (GVW) of 162,569 lbs. (73,740 kg), hauling up to a 44.1 U.S. ton (40 metric ton) payload at its maximum ground speed of 34.7 mph (55.9 kph). Improved operating performance, lower fuel consumption, improved operator comfort and enhanced serviceability are features of the HM400-3 that provide increased productivity and lower operating costs.

With the introduction of the Komatsu CARE Program, every Komatsu Tier 4 Interim construction machine comes standard with complimentary factory scheduled maintenance for 2,000 hours or the first three years (whichever occurs first), and includes two complimentary Komatsu Diesel Particulate Filter (KDPF) exchanges within the first five years. Engineered for the toughest applications around the world, the new Generation 9 range of Terex articulated trucks are powered by Scania engines which are renowned for high uptime and reliability, underpinned by a worldwide service network, the company said. Back-to-back testing with the new Generation 9 Tier 4i TA300 and the previous model (Tier 3 TA300) demonstrates that the new range is not only more productive but also more fuel efficient.

Dedicated to reducing downtime, the service points on Terex articulated trucks are designed for quick and easy access. The electronic-assisted hood raise and the fully tilting cab simplify access to major components and ground level service points, which further reduces downtime.

As well as reduced downtime, lower cost of ownership is a key feature of Terex artic haulers. All models in the Generation 9 range benefit from oil-cooled multiple-disc brakes on each axle providing extended brake component life, reducing service intervals and operating costs, and improving overall braking performance compared to traditional dry-disc brake systems that are fitted as standard on other leading manufacturers’ trucks.

The Terex cab is developed around the operator to improve comfort, efficiency and productivity. Volvo Construction Equipment
The new F-Series articulated haulers from Volvo Construction Equipment not only meet the demanding standards set by the Tier 4i (US) and Stage IIIB (Europe) emissions legislation, but also feature a package of improvements in functionality, design and maintenance. The F-Series ranges from the 26.5-ton A25F up to the 43-ton A40F, each model maneuvering, traveling and dumping in the most safe and efficient way.

Heavy-duty front and rear frames have been designed for severe off-road operation and long service life. The load body is also heavy duty, made from HB400 steel, and its design, high dump clearance and tipping angle all promote good material ejection. A powerful, load sensing “closed center” hydraulic system and double-acting, single-stage hoist cylinders raise the body even on steep downhill gradients.

The system allows for precise, controllable dumping – shortening cycle times and aiding safety. A load-and-dump brake is applied by pressing a button in the cab that applies the service brakes and shifts the transmission to neutral, further increasing safety and reducing operator fatigue. All machines also feature new dumping functions – detent body lowering and, notably, the adjustable tipping angle. Using the onboard Contronics system, operators can set the maximum tipping angle and, therefore, overall height of the body, ensuring safety when working under electrical wires, in tunnels or underground, for example.

The drivetrain features a standard Automatic Traction Control (ATC) system, which prevents operators leaving their haulers permanently set in all-wheel drive mode, even when not needed, for example on good or paved roads.
