Gas Tax Talk

RR021119 pumpFeb. 11, 2019 – For the first time in a long time, talk about increasing the gas tax is heating up, and an increase could become a reality. According to a report on Politico, at least one Republican wants his colleagues to make the leap – and to risk their careers if they have to. John Katko (R-N.Y.), a member of the House Transportation Committee, said at a panel sponsored by the Association of Equipment Manufacturers that lawmakers need to have "political courage" and "guts" on the issue. "You can't always think about your job here in Congress. This is a duty, it's not a right for you to have this job. If it costs you the job for something like this, the country's better off and you made a difference," he said. Ed Mortimer, vice president for transportation and infrastructure at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, which advocates for a gas tax increase, said the Chamber would "go to any district in America" to support a member of Congress who was "primaried" for backing infrastructure investment.
