Frac Sand Questions
- Written by Mark Kuhar
December 30, 2011 – About 80 people gathered recently at the Winona County History Center in Winona, Minn., to talk about frac sand mining in their county. This is something you are going to hear about over and over again as fracking activity continues to grow. The discussion ranged from land reclamation to concerns about potential effects on drinking water and the health of local residents. "As we evaluate these proposed land uses, we need to be deliberative and careful to minimize groundwater impacts," said Toby Dogwiler, a professor of geoscience at Winona State University and one of four experts who spoke during the meeting. Aggregates producers that have broadened into producing frac sand need to stay on top of this issue and be proactive and able to discuss the benefits of frac sand mining, not to mention being able to defend fracking – a growing and lucrative product area for producers.
