NIMBY up North – With Food and Music
- Written by Mark Kuhar
October 14, 2011 – Plans to create a quarry operation on 2,300 acres of potato farm land in Melancthon Township, Ontario, Canada, have run into the obligatory NIMBY roadblocks, and this weekend, a lot of people may get a chance to stand in solidarity with the community activists. Foodstock, a massive outdoor concert and food celebration will take place this Sunday, Oct. 16th, from 11 a.m.-5 p.m. in Honeywood, Ontario. Organizers are hoping the event will draw 20,000 people, and raise awareness about – and funds to fight – the proposed quarry, which would be owned by the U.S.-based Highland Companies. The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation just did a major story on the proposed quarry and local opposition to the project. The author, Jeannie Stiglic, did her homework too. She called Rock Products several weeks ago and spoke with me about the quarry industry to get a solid background for her story.
