The Cupertino Quarry Shooting: Aftermath
- Written by Mark Kuhar
October 7, 2011 – It was a tragedy of unspeakable proportions, the kind that does not happen in the aggregates and cement industries. Three workers dead, six wounded, and one carjacking victim hospitalized as well. Lehigh Hanson's Permanente Cement Plant and quarry in Cupertino has challenges today and going forward different from any other aggregates or cement plant in the country. Do other operations have to deal with plant fatalities based on accidents? Yes, every year. But an employee going on a shooting rampage? No, that's something you hear about in relation to post offices or military bases, not construction-materials operations. In a prepared statement, the company said, "Our community is still very much in a state of shock. Our thoughts and prayers remain with the victims and their families. Our first priority right now is taking care of our people." I think I speak for everyone when I say we stand with you Lehigh Hanson.
